Reading instruction in second grade is conducted through small groups and is tailored to meet the needs of each student. A variety of reading series are used and supplemental nightly reading is encouraged. Spelling and phonics are tied together within the Saxon Phonics method and enhances our reading series. Second grade language or English is a composite of several series, emphasizing sentence structure, parts of speech, basic punctuation, and story writing.
The Everyday Math program is used in second grade. Heavy emphasis is made on learning addition and subtraction facts and interpreting story problems. Second grade students are introduced to multiplication and division.
Science, Social Students and Heath are taught from a unit perspective with a hands-on approach. Group discussions, experiments, and the use of our outdoor classroom further enhance specific units of study.
The backbone of our elementary program, as well as all other grades, is built on the principles set forth in the Bible.
Daily Bible and Chapel emphasize Christian values and perspectives. Students learn about the Bible through Biblical stories and scripture memorization.
P.E., Spanish, art, music, computer and weekly library visits enhance the formal learning process. Additionally, many special events take place throughout the year such as field trips that coordinate with unit studies, special performances, and class parties. Some extra curricular activities are offered to our second grade students including Cal-kids basketball.
